RADCHEM produces the REKKER serie of Gamma Beam Irradiator systems. The  gamma irradiators has been developed in late 2005 by REKKER (Hungary) to meet the customers’s requirements for fast, high accuracy equipment for metrology application.   There are several models of gamma irradiators, each used for metrology applications and available in a variety of source configurations.

The REKKER FOX-R20 SSL (Former name REKKER DMH-002) gamma beam irradiator (GBI) system is to be utilized mainly for calibration of detectors and other radiation protection unit. The irradiator is a Category II. irradiator. The sealed sources are kept in a dry storage position (in fully shielded condition) when there are not in use (off position), the GBI shall be shielded on all sides.

Shielding

REKKER FOX-R20 SSL gamma beam irradiator (GBI) is made up from a lead shield, a welded-frame, and the additional equipment. All of them are under the cover. Same parts of the torpedo is made up from tungsten to minimalize the radiation radiation  under the equipment.

Safety Features

The irradiator system is designed to be a safe system.  “Fail Safe” design constraints have been applied to all components that involve source exposure.  A safety interlock system is an integral part of the design to prevent inadvertent exposure.

In the case of signal from interlock the irradiator is stopped automatically and source goes back to its safe storage position. The interlocks work independently from each other and do not affect each other (diversity). In case of an aggressive access the detectors get the controller to break the irradiation immediately.

Radioactive Source

The FOX-R20 SSL gamma beam irradiator (GBI) is loaded with one double capsulated Cs-137 source, their activity maximum 7,4 TBq (20 Ci). The radioactive Cs-137 sources are doubly encapsulated – hermetically sealed in a stainless-steel capsule –  special form sources.

Collimator

The collimator port of REKKER FOX-R20 SSL gamma beam irradiator (GBI) holds a removable collimator that is designed based on ISO 4037:1996 to provide a circular radiation beam. The Beam centerline is selectable by the customer but based on the facility (room) design we could offer the best solution.

Attenuator

A REKKER-M-1000 manual or REKKER-A-1000 automatic attenuator is installed in the system. Include set of primary beam attenuators (number of layers is 4-8 ) allowing to decreas the beam intensity by factor  in 2-1000 range, installed on a rigid support frame. The outer attenuators contains a last tungsten shape for better beam profile. The attenuator level is adjusted manually or automatically by the operator before the irradiation

Control system (safety and security)

The irradiator operates through a remote-control system that is installed in the control room and has connection and indication to various interlocks and the components. It shows and collects every information from the subsystem and storages it. More buttons (start/stop/reset/emergency) are installed in the control panel. In the case of signal from interlock the irradiator is stopped automatically and source goes back to its safe storage position.

The REKKER FOX-R20-3 SSL (Former name REKKER DMH-002-3) gamma beam irradiator (GBI) system is to be utilized mainly for calibration of detectors and other radiation protection unit. The irradiator is a Category II. irradiator. The sealed sources are kept in a dry storage position (in fully shielded condition) when there are not in use (off position), the GBI shall be shielded on all sides.

Shielding

REKKER FOX-R20-3 SSL gamma beam irradiator (GBI) is made up from a lead shield, a welded-frame, and the additional equipment.  The unit has 3 independent storage positions for gamma sources (Cs-137 or Am-241). The shielding capacity of unit is 740 GBq Cs-137 equivalent.

Radioactive Source

The FOX-R20-3 SSL gamma beam irradiator (GBI) is loaded with two double capsulated Cs-137 selaed sources (sum of the activity is 740 GBq), and with one Am-241 single capsulated sealead source.

Positioning and alignment bench

More different type of benches are available. REKKER MRPS-X-M(A) positioning and alignment bench movable only to one direction, parallel with X axis, and REKKER MRPS-X-MM(AA) bench is adjustable into X and Y direction (X-axis that is horizontal and parallel to the radiation beam, the Y-axis that is horizontal and perpendicular). The most complete bench REKKER MRPS-X-MMM in which case the platform is moving into three directions, the Z-axis that is vertical and perpendicular to the radiation beam. The benches could be manually or automatically movable, every made with brakes on guided tracks for positioning and alignment of the sensitive volume of calibrated instruments. Each axis includes a metal scale (in mm) to confirm positioning. The construction of the banch provide the minimalization of scattered irradiation of primary beam. The size and weight capacity of table (platform) is adjustable maximum available dimension is 700 mm x 700 mm and its weight capacity is maximum 50 kg.

The REKKER FOX-6 SSL (Former name REKKER DMH-002/6) gamma beam irradiator (GBI) system is to be utilized mainly for calibration of detectors and other radiation protection unit. The irradiator is a Category II. irradiator. The sealed sources are kept in a dry storage position (in fully shielded condition) when there are not in use (off position), the GBI shall be shielded on all sides.
