The REKKER FOX-N6 SSL (Former name REKKER DMH-0012) neutron beam irradiator (NBI) system is to be utilized mainly for calibration of detectors and other radiation protection unit. The irradiator is a Category II. irradiator. The sealed sources are kept in a dry storage position (in fully shielded condition) when there are not in use (off position), the NBI shall be shielded on all sides.
Shielding
REKKER FOX-N6 SSL irradiator is made up from a special plastic shielding, a welded-frame, and the additional equipment. All of them are under the cover.
Safety Features
The irradiator system is designed to be a safe system. “Fail Safe” design constraints have been applied to all components that involve source exposure. A safety interlock system is an integral part of the design to prevent inadvertent exposure.
In the case of signal from interlock the irradiator is stopped automatically and source goes back to its safe storage position. The interlocks work independently from each other and do not affect each other (diversity). In case of an aggressive access the detectors get the controller to break the irradiation immediately.
Radioactive Source
The FOX-N60 SSL is loaded with maximum 6 pcs. neutron sources, their activity maximum is depend from the energy of isotope. In the case of Am-Be source this activity is 10 Ci (370 GBq), The radioactive sources are doubly encapsulated – hermetically sealed in a stainless-steel capsule – special form sources.
Control system (safety and security)
The irradiator operates through a remote-control system that is installed in the control room and has connection and indication to various interlocks and the components. It shows and collects every information from the subsystem and storages it. More buttons (start/stop/reset/emergency) are installed in the control panel. In the case of signal from interlock the irradiator is stopped automatically and source goes back to its safe storage position.
